Glue stick therapy

Tonight we had an event for the ladies at church. . . We made some cute cards and had some delicious treats and iced mochas. It was fabulous! The thing that stuck out to me at the end, though, was a comment made by the woman who put all of the card-making supplies together. (If you have never done scrapbooking or stamping - putting together make-and-take cards is a lot of work!!) After the evening was done and we were cleaning up she said, "I am so glad I did this. . . preparing all this stuff was theraputic for me this week."

So let's be honest here, how many times do we volunteer at church and say, "I am so glad I did this. . . preparing all this stuff was theraputic for me this week?" Or is the phrase that comes out of our mouths more likely like "oh my word, I'm glad tonight is done. . . that was a lot of work."

I think its possible for us to feel like my friend did tonight - if we're doing what we are really meant to do. . . A lot of people volunteer at church because they feel like they should, or because someone asked them and they feel bad saying no. The problem with that, though, is that then we don't particularely enjoy the service that we are doing. We get worn out and burnt out rather than feeling fulfilled and used by God. Maybe a better way of going about volunteering is finding what we truly love and figuring out how we can do that at church. Then everyone wins - because we will always enjoy our work, and our friends will get to experience the best parts of us when we serve. . .

Here's to the theraputic results of serving God and having fun at the same time. Cheers!
